It’s almost time to head back to school this August! Back to school season can be very exciting and scary at the same time for both parents and children. Some children look forward to seeing their friends again, learning new things and participating in activities in the classrooms! Some children may even be nervous, especially those going to school for the first time.
Kids need to adjust to new routines as the school year begins. Returning to school can be fun and exciting. Here are 6 tips to ease the transition into a new school year:
- Make Reading a Habit!
Reading is the foundation for learning! From Kindergarten to third grade, children are learning to read. From third grade and on, children are reading to learn. Reading helps your child build crucial skills in literacy, communication and helps them develop social skills for future school success. Encourage and create good reading habits at an early age. Before school starts, set aside time to read! Take your child to the library or bookstore so they can choose their own reading materials.
- Adjust Bedtime Routine Before School
During the summer, kids may get to play longer in the evening because they don’t necessarily have to stick to any early bedtime routine. In order to avoid bedtime problems before school, the best thing to do is to get them back on a routine one to two weeks before school starts. Start off by limiting screen time at night and turn them completely about an hour before bedtime. Another important part of a healthy sleep schedule is setting a wake up time. This will help make school mornings easier and less stressful for both your and your child.
- Involve Your Child Shopping for School Supplies
Children can be more excited about attending school when they have new stuff! Involve your child when shopping for school supplies. Let them pick out items they’d like to use for school, like a lunchbox with their favorite superhero or a folder with their favorite animal! This will help them feel more excited about school, and hopefully relieve some of their anxiety.
- Limit Screen Time
Electronic devices such as laptops and phones can be extremely useful tools for learning and education. Unfortunately, too much exposure to screens can harm your child’s development and can distract them from academics. Keep an eye on your child’s screen time and prioritize other activities, like homework or chores around the house before playing on electronics.
- Create a Quiet Study Area
Children need a quiet space for studying and doing school work. This spot needs to be free of distractions so they can focus! Find a space in your home that can be used as a study area. It doesn’t have to be a huge a space, but make sure it’s appropriate for learning. Supply the area with the items they need to complete their assignments and surround the area with books and materials.
- Create Rewards
Give your little one something to look forward to by creating a reward system! If your child finishes all their school work by the end of the week or make a good grade on a paper, then a prize could be in store! Prizes don’t have to be a toy either, they can be experiences like a trip to the ice cream shop or tickets to a movie!
Back to school season can be challenging for parents and children. These tips can help make the transition a bit easier!
